It’s a question asked by writers and bloggers everywhere and with more
and more people hopping on the blog train every day, it’s a question
that’s pretty important to answer.
So, with so many great blogs
out there, how do you make yours stand out? How do you increase your
readership and, more importantly, how do you keep them coming back for
more?
There are lists of tips and tricks for writing a successful
blog all over the internet but these are the ones we consider to be
most important.
#1 Find a niche
When choosing the topic
you want to write about, try to find a niche and then make sure you
stay on topic. Readers, and also importantly search engines, love the
specific, so if you can find an unusual angle that other people aren’t
writing about on a daily basis, you’re onto a winner.
Tips:
However competitive your subject matter is, there’s always a new
approach to take – you just need to find it! Take a look at other
successful blogs in competitive sectors to see how they are
differentiating themselves whether it be through humour, analytics,
controversy or target audience.
#2 Integration
Going
back to the search engine comment in the previous section, integration
is extremely important. It’s a great idea to link your blog up with your
current website (if possible) because if you’re looking to make money
from your blog then SEO is really important. If your current website has
a strong backlink profile then it’ll make it even more desirable to
outreach bloggers, and that’s where you’ll make your money.
Tips:
If you don’t have a website already, don’t fear! You can still start a
successful blog but it might take you longer to get referrals through
blogger outreach as you’ll have less ‘assets’ to market or outreach
with.
Be patient. Blogging has a domino affect – the more you put out
great content, the more comments and shares you’ll get and the bigger
you’ll grow!
#3 Passion
Passionate writing is essential
if your blog’s going to take off and that means writing about something
that you love. If you’re not interested in what you’re writing about
and you see it purely as a means to an end – maybe someone’s told you
that writing about a certain topic will make you more successful than
something you actually want to write about – then your content will
suffer. If your content suffers, the consequences are pretty obvious –
your blog will suffer too.
#4 Marketing
Now this is something that people are usual pretty uncomfortable with and therefore avoid, but it’s an essential key to success.
Launching a blog and gaining thousands of readers with no marketing effort just doesn’t happen.
Marketing is essential. However, it’s something that can be done in a number of ways.
Whether
you choose to write about topics that are popular in the searches right
now or you comment on other people’s blogs to try to drum up a little
publicity of your own, it’s up to you how you do it, just make sure you
do.
#5 Interaction
If you’re blogging about topics that
people are interested in then they should be talking. Despite what you
may think, asking people to comment on your work isn’t cheesy, it’s
essential.
People love interaction so if you’re asking them to share
their opinions they’re sure to do so. Make sure you’re ready to respond
to contributions and feedback and also make sure you’re friendly and
welcoming. Remember, these are your readers and you want them to return.
#6 Proof
Although
it’s the last point it’s arguably the most important one, you should
always proof your work. If you’re going to become a successful blogger,
someone that people listen to and base their opinions upon, you need to
make sure you’re not making silly mistakes in your writing.
Don’t get
me wrong, no one’s perfect and everyone makes mistakes, but by
spell-checking and proof reading your work you’ll not only be saving
your reputation and credibility, you’ll be preventing negative SEO too.
Now your turn!
There
are so many components to making a blog successful but getting the core
ingredients right is essential. Whether you’re thinking of starting a
blog or already have (without much success), these tips should help you
focus or refocus your roadmap to blogging success.
